School Board approves $80K for new staff laptops amid technology concerns

Fairfield Union Local School District is set to enhance its technology resources after the board approved a motion to purchase new staff laptops for $80,000 during their meeting on July 7, 2025. This decision marks a significant step in addressing the aging technology currently in use, which has been causing issues for staff.

The new laptops will replace devices that were purchased in 2021 and are now showing signs of wear and tear. The district's technology coordinator, Mr. Schauffner, explained that the initial plan was to buy the laptops next summer, but with budget considerations and the potential for better pricing, he opted to make the purchase now. In discussions about the procurement process, Schauffner noted that the district was able to negotiate the price down from an initial quote of $85,000 to $80,000, which translates to only a slight increase in cost per laptop compared to previous purchases. He emphasized the importance of having a direct relationship with Dell, the manufacturer, which allows for better pricing and support options.

The meeting also touched on the need for students to gain proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, as many are currently relying on Google Docs and Sheets. Concerns were raised about students entering the workforce without adequate experience in widely-used software like Excel. Schauffner mentioned that while some classes do offer exposure to Microsoft products, the district is exploring options to expand access to these essential tools.

As the district moves forward with these technology upgrades, it aims to better prepare students for future academic and career opportunities.
