Hinsdale Historical Society reviews notable homes including Fresh Air Home and Barfield residence

The Historic Preservation Commission of Hinsdale, Illinois, convened on July 7, 2025, to discuss the inclusion of several historically significant properties into the village's preservation list. The meeting highlighted the rich architectural and cultural history of Hinsdale, focusing on three notable homes.

The first property discussed was a craftsman colonial revival house built in 1912. The house has undergone renovations, revealing artifacts such as a safe bearing the name of John C. Wood, a former village president and influential merchant. The potential original owners, Wood and William Barfield, a prominent architect in the area, were noted for their contributions to Hinsdale's architectural landscape.

Next, the commission reviewed the property at 32 West Ogden, known as the Fresh Air Home. Constructed around 1852, this house served as a retreat for underprivileged women and children from Chicago during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Despite being hidden from view due to subdivision, the house retains much of its original character and is recognized for its historical significance.

Lastly, the commission considered a home at 234 East Third Street, built circa 1895 in the Queen Anne style. This property has been acknowledged in previous surveys for its historical importance and features that reflect its architectural heritage, although some details have been lost over time.

The discussions underscored the importance of preserving Hinsdale's historical properties, which serve as a testament to the village's past and contribute to its unique character.
