Hinsdale Historical Society adds seven homes to significant structures list

The Hinsdale Historic Preservation Commission made significant strides in preserving the village's architectural heritage during its recent meeting on July 7, 2025. The commission reviewed and recommended the inclusion of seven historically significant properties to the village's official list, a move that underscores the community's commitment to maintaining its rich history.

Among the highlighted properties is 15 North Monroe Street, a Tudor Revival home built around 1930. The commission noted the importance of gathering information from both the current homeowners and the Hinsdale Historical Society, as there were gaps in the village's records due to the house's previous address. The home features a charming cottage style, with historical photos showcasing its original design.

Another notable property is 136 South Oak Street, constructed in 1912 and designed by the renowned architect William Barfield, known for his work on several prominent buildings in Hinsdale. The current owner discovered original blueprints and an artifact—a safe bearing the name of former village president John C. Wood—during renovations, adding to the home's historical significance.

The commission also discussed 32 West Ogden Avenue, a property with roots dating back to 1852. Once known as the Fresh Air Home, it provided therapeutic retreats for underprivileged families from Chicago. Despite being somewhat hidden from view, the house retains much of its original character and serves as a reminder of Hinsdale's philanthropic past.

Lastly, 234 East Third Street, built around 1895, was recognized for its Queen Anne style and has been included in previous surveys as historically significant. The commission emphasized the need to preserve such homes, which contribute to the village's unique architectural landscape.

The commission's recommendations will now be forwarded to the village board for final approval. This proactive approach to historic preservation not only honors Hinsdale's past but also enhances the community's identity and character for future generations. The inclusion of these properties reflects a broader commitment to maintaining the village's historical integrity while fostering community pride.
