West Salem lacrosse team secures $750K funding for Keizer Rapids Park project

Keizer City Council members celebrated a significant milestone for local youth sports during their meeting on July 7, 2025, as they recognized the successful funding request for a new sports facility. The council approved a $750,000 allocation, which will support the third phase of development at Keizer Rapids Park, a project that promises to provide a permanent home for various youth sports teams, including lacrosse.

The meeting featured heartfelt testimonies from local high school lacrosse players Grayson Dusenberry and Carson Colello, who shared their experiences and the challenges faced by club teams in securing practice and game locations. Grayson, who recently graduated with a 4.2 GPA and a scholarship to Oregon State University, emphasized the importance of having a dedicated space for youth sports, stating, "This project gives us a place to call home." Carson, an incoming senior, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the sense of community and belonging that sports provide for young people.

Council President Shane Starr praised the students for their commitment, noting their willingness to testify before the state legislature to advocate for the funding. Their efforts, alongside support from Representative Mannix, were instrumental in securing the necessary funds amidst a competitive environment where numerous groups were vying for financial support.
