West Fargo City Commission approves formal public comment policy ahead of August deadline

The City of West Fargo took significant steps towards enhancing public engagement during its City Commission meeting on July 19, 2025, by approving a formal public comment policy. This new policy aligns with recent legislative requirements mandating public comment periods at all governing board meetings.

Rachel Richard Lorteman, the city's manager of public affairs, presented the policy, which builds upon existing procedures established in May 2023. The updated policy stipulates that speakers must address topics listed on the current or previous meeting's agenda, ensuring that public discussions remain relevant and informed. Additionally, it allows non-residents to indicate if they are speaking on behalf of a business or organization, broadening the scope of community representation.

Commissioner Zondell raised questions regarding the registration process for speakers, confirming that individuals must register by noon on the day of the meeting, a detail that remains unchanged from prior procedures. The commission unanimously approved the policy, which will take effect immediately, ensuring compliance with the August 1 deadline set by the state legislature.

In other discussions, the commission also moved forward with the first reading of ordinance 12 59, signaling ongoing legislative activity within the city. The swift approval of the public comment policy reflects West Fargo's commitment to transparency and community involvement, setting a precedent for future meetings and fostering a more engaged citizenry.
