Phoenix honors city founders with historic fountain at old City Hall

In the heart of Phoenix, Arizona, the sun glints off the waters of the Swilling Fountain, a historic tribute nestled beside the old City Hall. Erected in 1931, this striking fountain honors two pivotal figures in the city’s history: Lieutenant Jack Swilling and his wife, Trinidad Escalante.

Swilling, a visionary, played a crucial role in transforming the arid landscape of Phoenix by revitalizing the ancient Hohokam canals, which laid the groundwork for the city’s irrigation system. His efforts were complemented by Escalante, affectionately known as the "Mother of Phoenix," who established the first pioneer home in the Salt River Valley in 1868.
