City Council approves drone trade-in for police department's upgraded technology

Aberdeen City Council made significant strides in enhancing public safety and community resources during their meeting on July 7, 2025. The council approved a motion to upgrade the police department's drone capabilities by trading in three outdated drones for a new model. This decision, presented by Chief McNeil, aims to improve emergency response and safety measures, particularly in critical situations such as locating missing persons and assessing dangerous environments before officers enter.

The trade-in will cost the city approximately $9.22, effectively offsetting the expense with a trade-in value of $9.42. Chief McNeil emphasized the importance of drones in modern policing, noting their utility in various scenarios, including recent incidents involving gunfire in residential areas. The department currently has two additional drones, ensuring they maintain adequate resources for their operations.

In addition to the drone upgrade, the council also reviewed and approved claims and payroll for the city, ensuring financial responsibilities are met for the pay periods covering mid-June to early July.

City Manager Robin provided updates on upcoming budget preparations, highlighting the urgency to present a balanced budget within the next month. The council is also opening the promo fund for public requests, which will be available until August 4, allowing partner organizations to seek funding for community projects.
