Lewisburg City Council reviews adoption of international property maintenance code

The Lewisburg City Council is poised to adopt the 2018 International Property Maintenance Code, a significant move that will replace Chapter 13 of the municipal code entirely. This new code aims to clarify definitions and expand existing regulations concerning abandoned properties, unsafe structures, and other maintenance issues within the city.

During the work session on July 1, 2025, Chris, a council member, emphasized the code's comprehensive nature, stating it provides clearer guidelines compared to the current municipal language. He assured that adopting this code would not result in the loss of any existing regulations but would enhance them. A new three-member board will be established to handle appeals regarding code interpretations, ensuring residents have a platform to voice concerns.

The council discussed the timeline for adoption, with some members expressing the need for thorough review before proceeding. City Attorney Hutto was tasked with reviewing the code, and while there was a suggestion to delay the vote until next month, the consensus leaned towards moving forward with the agenda for the upcoming meeting.

In addition to the property maintenance code, the council reviewed a request to rezone a property at 650 Spring Place Road from light industrial to intermediate business, allowing for auto repair services. This request received a favorable recommendation from the Planning Commission and is expected to be approved without objection.

Another topic of discussion was the request from the Marshall County Highway Department to annex a portion of Globe Road into the city limits. The Planning Commission had previously given an unfavorable recommendation, citing the lack of city structures in the area and the potential burden of maintaining the road. The council acknowledged the need for careful consideration of future infrastructure responsibilities before making a decision.
