Lapham Center approves $50K flooring renovation to improve accessibility

The New Canaan Board of Selectmen has approved a significant flooring project aimed at enhancing accessibility and aesthetics in the town's main building. During the meeting on July 8, 2025, officials discussed the replacement of carpeting on the first floor and the installation of vinyl flooring in areas that have experienced issues, particularly in the coffee area.

The project, which has been carefully planned in collaboration with local stakeholders, received a favorable bid from contractor Frank Hagen, amounting to $49,922. This initial phase is crucial as it addresses not only the visual appeal of the space but also the functional needs of residents, especially those with hearing impairments. The new carpet will feature acoustic backing, which is expected to improve sound quality and reduce disturbances for individuals using hearing aids.

The project is complex due to the age of the building, with potential challenges related to the existing subflooring. To ensure a smooth installation, additional subflooring may be required, which will help create a stable surface for the new carpet tiles. The Board has also approved a 10% contingency fund, bringing the total budget to $54,914, to accommodate any unforeseen issues that may arise during the renovation.
