La Porte residents demand transparency on controversial zoning proposal near golf course

During the recent Plan Commission meeting held on July 8, 2025, in La Porte, community concerns regarding a proposed zoning change were at the forefront of discussions. Residents expressed frustration over the lack of communication and transparency surrounding the project, which is set to take place on land east of Highway 39, south of I-90, and north of BriarLeaf Golf Course.

One resident, Alan Lang, highlighted the confusion caused by the notification process. He noted that the envelope containing the zoning change information lacked any company name or logo, making it difficult for recipients to identify the sender. Lang emphasized that the vague description of the location—"south of the toll road, north of the golf course"—was insufficient for residents to understand the implications of the proposed changes.

Lang also raised concerns about the potential impact on local school children, urging the commission to consider the need for affordable housing in the area. He pointed out that the development could include hundreds of new units, stressing the importance of ensuring that some of these units remain accessible to families in need.

In a related comment, Kathleen Lang, who was unable to attend the meeting, submitted a request for the zoning change to be denied or sent to the city council without a recommendation. She criticized the short notice given to adjacent landowners, stating that the seven-day period to respond was inadequate, especially considering the recent holidays. Kathleen also noted the absence of visible notice posted on the property, which further complicated residents' ability to engage with the proposal.

The meeting underscored the need for improved communication between the city and its residents, particularly regarding developments that could significantly affect the community.
