YOLO Transportation District unveils active transportation plan to enhance mobility access

Yolo County is set to enhance its transportation infrastructure with a new active transportation plan aimed at improving mobility for underserved communities. During the Board of Supervisors meeting on July 8, 2025, officials discussed the Yolo Active Transportation Corridors Plan, which has received a significant boost from a $1.2 million federal grant. This funding is specifically designated for outreach and planning efforts, ensuring that the voices of low-income and minority residents are prioritized in the development of multi-use trails.

The project, which has been in the works for two years, aims to address mobility barriers and update the county's 2013 bicycle plan. The plan will not only create a network of off-street trails but also enhance safety features such as lighting and crosswalks, responding to community feedback gathered through extensive outreach efforts. Project manager Brenda Loma Lee emphasized the importance of community engagement, noting that 22 workshops were held across Yolo County to gather input directly from residents.

In addition to improving transportation options, the plan is expected to foster connections between communities, providing easier access to essential services like clinics and grocery stores. The outreach process has already yielded 381 map comments from residents, reflecting their needs and desires for safer and more accessible infrastructure.

The Board of Supervisors also discussed potential funding sources for related projects, including the recently passed Proposition 4, which allocates $10 billion for climate resilience initiatives. This funding could support road improvements and wildfire resilience efforts, further enhancing community safety and infrastructure.

As the Yolo Active Transportation Corridors Plan moves forward, officials are optimistic about its potential to transform transportation in the county, making it safer and more accessible for all residents. The next steps will involve finalizing project designs and applying for additional funding to ensure successful implementation.
