DeKalb County partners with Decide DeKalb for supplier academy success

In the heart of DeKalb County, a vibrant discussion unfolded during the recent FAB Committee meeting, where local leaders emphasized the importance of empowering small businesses within the community. The atmosphere was charged with a sense of purpose as committee members shared their commitment to inclusivity and support for local entrepreneurs.

One of the key highlights was the collaboration with Decide DeKalb, aimed at enhancing the participation of small businesses in the county's procurement process. The initiative, which included the county's first-ever Supplier Academy, provided a month-long training program designed to equip local businesses with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the certification process. Out of approximately 80 applicants, 64 were selected to participate, with nine ultimately achieving certification as local vendors.

While the numbers may seem modest, committee members viewed this as a significant step forward. The goal was not solely to certify businesses but to educate and prepare them for future opportunities. Many aspiring vendors faced challenges, such as lacking the required two years of business operation or necessary licenses, which often disqualified them from certification. However, the training provided valuable insights, ensuring that even those who did not become certified gained essential knowledge for future endeavors.

Looking ahead, the committee expressed optimism about hosting another Supplier Academy in October, hoping to build on the success of the previous program. The commitment to fostering a supportive environment for small businesses reflects a broader vision for economic growth and community development in DeKalb County.
