Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center honors retiring employee Debbie Hensley after 23 years

The Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center held its December 2024 Board Meeting on December 13, 2024, focusing on key updates and significant personnel changes. The meeting, chaired for the first time by a new chair, began with a roll call and the approval of minutes from the previous meeting.

Executive Director David Matlock presented a report highlighting the center's financial status. He noted an increase in general revenue allocation to $2,871,813, along with an additional state appropriation of over $55,000. Matlock reported that non-general revenue is projected to exceed expectations, with current figures at $707,000, primarily due to an interest adjustment from the previous year.

A significant moment in the meeting was the recognition of Debbie Hensley, who is retiring after 23 years of service. Senator Pillion and Delegate O'Quinn presented her with a commendation from the General Assembly and a flag flown over the Capitol in honor of her contributions to the center and the community. Matlock praised Hensley for her dedication and compassionate leadership, noting her impact on the center's culture and operations.

The meeting also introduced Alicia Smells, who will be taking over Hensley’s responsibilities. Matlock expressed confidence in the center's financial health, stating that while marketing expenses may exceed the budget due to delayed payments for a new website, overall revenue is expected to surpass projections.
