Coptic community proposes church construction in Boise to meet local needs

In the heart of Meridian, city officials gathered to discuss a significant proposal that could reshape the local community landscape. The evening air buzzed with anticipation as Kireluz Yousef, a civil engineer from Bothell, Washington, stepped forward to present a project that has been years in the making for the Coptic community in Boise.

Since 2008, the Coptic community has sought a permanent home for their spiritual needs, a quest that has become increasingly urgent for families, youth, and elders who require consistent access to their faith. Currently, the nearest Coptic Orthodox church is located in Seattle, a daunting distance that poses challenges, especially during harsh weather conditions.

Yousef detailed the proposal for the construction of the Virgin Mary and Saint Mark Coptic Orthodox Church, which would be situated on a 0.515-acre parcel within Meridian's jurisdiction. The planned building will encompass 9,930 square feet across two floors, designed to accommodate up to 160 congregants. This new church aims to provide a vital spiritual hub for the local Coptic Orthodox congregation, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

As the council members listened intently, the significance of this project became clear.
