Sawanica Central High School District celebrates graduation and launches summer programs

Under the warm glow of the Sewanhaka Central High School District's administrative office, the Board of Education convened on July 8, 2025, to celebrate recent achievements and outline upcoming initiatives for the new school year. The meeting opened with heartfelt congratulations to the 1,387 graduates from New Hyde Park, Floral Park, H. Frank Carey, Elmont, and Sewanhaka High Schools, who recently celebrated their accomplishments at Hofstra University.

The board expressed pride in the students' success, noting that an impressive 99 percent of the class of 2025 graduated, with 70 percent planning to attend four-year colleges. This achievement reflects the dedication of the district's educators and staff, who were commended for their roles in creating memorable graduation ceremonies.

As the district transitions into the new academic year, several programs have already commenced. The extended school year program began on July 1, welcoming approximately 75 students who engage in a functional academic curriculum, travel training, and weekly field trips, including swimming at Tully Park Pool.

Additionally, the student enrichment program kicked off on July 7, attracting over 500 incoming seventh graders. This initiative aims to ease their transition into middle school through group projects, social-emotional learning, and familiarization with their new environment.

Summer school also started at Elmont Memorial High School, where around 200 students are enrolled in credit-bearing courses and preparing for upcoming Regents exams.

Looking ahead, the district is excited to host "Music Under the Stars" on July 22, featuring performances from students across all schools. This event promises to be a delightful evening of music, inviting community members to bring lawn chairs and enjoy the show. Furthermore, the district's partnership with Plaza Theater continues to flourish, with a production of "Once on This Island" scheduled for July 17 and 18 at the Elmont Memorial Library Theater.

As the meeting concluded, the board emphasized its commitment to fostering a supportive and enriching environment for all students, setting a positive tone for the year ahead.
