Mayor Rilling approves $2.6M for Norwalk's public safety and infrastructure improvements

In a pivotal meeting on July 8, 2025, the Norwalk Common Council took significant steps to enhance public safety and infrastructure, authorizing substantial contracts and funding initiatives.

Mayor Harry W. Rilling received the green light to execute a contract with MES for the purchase of new self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBAs), totaling $870,340. This includes $247,690 for face pieces and regulators and $622,650 for harnesses, aimed at bolstering the city's emergency response capabilities.

Additionally, the council approved the acceptance of grant funding from the Department of Transportation for the 2025 Speed and Aggressive Driving Grant, with both the mayor and Chief of Police James Walsh authorized to finalize necessary agreements. This initiative is expected to enhance road safety measures across the city.

In a move to support local education, the council authorized the mayor to secure an Eversource Energy easement for new electrical service to Norwalk High School, alongside a significant increase in the contingency allowance for the school's renovation project, amounting to $3,159,034. This funding will facilitate the demolition of existing structures and the construction of new facilities.

The meeting also addressed public works, approving a sanitary sewer extension at 2 Mueller Avenue, confirming the city's infrastructure can handle the additional flow. Furthermore, the council authorized a contract with Star Construction Corporation for the West Rox Road sidewalk project, valued at over $2 million, ensuring improved pedestrian access in the area.
