Charlottesville installs largest solar project at KTEC building and updates City Hall

Charlottesville is making significant strides in sustainability with the launch of its largest solar installation to date at the KTEC building. The 162-kilowatt solar system, which began installation in June, is expected to be completed this summer, marking a major milestone in the city’s renewable energy efforts.

In addition to the KTEC project, a smaller 31-kilowatt solar system has been installed at the new By Pass Fire Station, anticipated to cover 40% of the building's annual power needs. Both systems are part of the city’s solar program, which allows the city to own the installations outright.

City officials also discussed upcoming improvements to City Hall and the City Hall Annex, including updates to lighting, plumbing, and HVAC systems, set to begin later this year. These projects are guided by recent energy audits aimed at enhancing energy efficiency across city buildings.

Moreover, the city is exploring power purchase agreements (PPAs) for larger solar systems at Charlottesville High School and the new Charlottesville Bridal School. These agreements would allow a third party to install and operate the systems, with the city purchasing the generated power at a predetermined rate.

Charlottesville is also advancing its LED streetlight conversion project, which aims to replace most Dominion-owned streetlights with energy-efficient LED options. This initiative has garnered community interest due to concerns about light pollution and its impact on local ecosystems. The city is collaborating with Dominion to ensure the new lighting options are environmentally friendly and less intense.
