School Board addresses bus attendant roles and route readiness for upcoming school year

Las Cruces Public Schools is set to ensure a smooth start to the upcoming school year with all transportation routes for eligible students officially routed by July 15. During a recent Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Rees confirmed that while five bus routes currently lack permanent drivers, substitute drivers will cover these routes until they are filled.

The district has also initiated dry runs for bus drivers next week to familiarize them with their routes and stops, aiming to identify any potential delays before the school year begins. This proactive approach is designed to minimize disruptions on the first day of school, a concern raised by board members during the meeting.

In addition to the substitute drivers, six new drivers are currently in training, which will help fill the remaining open routes. The board emphasized the importance of having all transportation needs addressed to ensure students have a positive experience as they return to school.

The meeting also touched on the role of bus attendants, particularly on special education routes, highlighting their importance in assisting students with medical conditions or mobility needs.
