Harbor Springs extends disaster loan application deadline amid rising community support

Petoskey City Council has taken significant steps to support residents and businesses affected by recent disasters, as discussed in the July 7, 2025, meeting. A key highlight was the announcement of an extension for disaster loan applications, now open until August 8 for physical disaster loans and March 9 of the following year for economic injury loans. This extension allows residents more time to recover without the immediate pressure of loan payments, as the first year will incur no payments or interest.

The meeting featured Julie, a representative from the Small Business Administration (SBA), who provided updates on the disaster loan program. She emphasized that individuals can also apply for funding to enhance safety measures at their homes, making them more resilient against future disasters. The SBA has set up a center at Little Traverse Township, which will remain open until July 26, allowing residents to access assistance and resources.

As of the meeting, Emmet County has received 130 applications for disaster assistance, with 28 coming from Petoskey. This indicates a substantial need for support in the community, despite the primary impact area being Cheboygan County. The council is actively working to ensure that all businesses, including those not part of the chamber, are informed about available resources. Efforts include outreach through social media, newsletters, and direct communication with local business associations.

The meeting also highlighted the collaboration between the city, the chamber of commerce, and local nonprofits to ensure that residents are aware of all available assistance, including grants and loans. This cooperative approach aims to maximize support for those affected by the disaster, reinforcing the community's resilience and recovery efforts.
