Education Committee increases AEA grant for school chapters to $1,500 per teacher

In a recent work session of the Alabama Board of Education, discussions centered around the allocation and impact of the Alabama Education Association (AEA) grant, which has seen significant adjustments this year. The meeting revealed that the AEA grant line item stands at $100,000, a notable increase from previous allocations. Initially, the grant provided $500 per chapter, but through collaborative efforts, this amount has been raised to $1,500 per chapter, allowing a broader range of teachers—from second grade to high school English—to initiate and run these educational chapters.

The grant aims to support various programs related to Future Teachers of America (FTA), fostering an environment where any teacher can create a chapter, regardless of their subject area. Laura Bailey and Kayla Cantley from the Alabama State Department of Education played key roles in facilitating the grant process, ensuring that applications were received and processed efficiently.

Despite the increased funding, there remains uncertainty about the full utilization of the grant. Past years have shown that not all allocated funds were used, raising questions about the effectiveness of outreach and engagement with potential chapter leaders. The board expressed hope that the increased financial support would encourage more teachers to start new chapters, thereby enhancing educational opportunities across the state.
