District implements energy efficiency program saving $932,000 with ESSER funds

DeKalb CUSD 428 is celebrating significant energy savings and operational efficiency following the implementation of a state-of-the-art HVAC management system. During the recent board meeting on July 1, 2025, officials reported that the program, which was fully funded through federal ESSER grants, has already yielded nearly $1 million in cumulative savings since its launch.

The HVAC system, which integrates occupancy sensors and scheduling software, allows maintenance staff to manage heating and cooling remotely. This technology ensures that buildings are only heated or cooled when necessary, reducing energy waste and avoiding human error in temperature management. Originally projected to save the district $280,000 annually, the system is currently on track to exceed expectations with a return on investment (ROI) of 4.6 years, significantly better than the anticipated 6.1 years.

The board highlighted that the high school, in particular, has benefited from these improvements due to its complex scheduling needs. The system's efficiency is attributed to better management of building occupancy, especially during periods when students are not present.

In addition to the financial benefits, the program has also received positive feedback for its ease of use and reliability. Board members expressed their satisfaction with the results, noting that the initiative not only enhances energy efficiency but also contributes to a more sustainable operational model for the district.

As the district continues to monitor and optimize the system, officials are optimistic about the long-term savings and environmental impact, reinforcing their commitment to responsible resource management.
