Local leader addresses homeless crisis and promotes Black Business Expo activities

The City Council of Waukegan convened on July 10, 2025, to address various community issues, with a significant focus on homelessness and local events.

The meeting began with a poignant discussion led by a community member who expressed deep concern over the worsening homeless situation in Waukegan. He highlighted the challenges faced by families, particularly women with children, who are struggling without shelter. The speaker mentioned his efforts to connect individuals with available resources through a local resource center but noted that funding is limited. He urged the council to expedite the opening of a hotel that had received permits the previous year, emphasizing the urgent need for more accommodations for the homeless population.

In addition to the homelessness issue, the speaker promoted an upcoming event organized by Black Lives Matter, celebrating Black businesses in August. He announced the fourth annual Black Business Expo, scheduled for August 23, 2025, at Birch Bay Bowling Alley. The event will feature free bowling for children and the distribution of full backpacks to students, aiming to support families in the community. He encouraged local businesses and organizations to participate and reach out for vendor opportunities.

Following this discussion, several community members, including Claire Quinn, Lakisha Robinson, Brandon Ewing, Mark Drobnick, and Margaret Carrasco, were invited to speak, each allotted three minutes to share their thoughts and concerns.
