Mayor details Ozark's major development projects and EMS service improvements

Ozark, AL is on the fast track to revitalization, as Mayor Mark Blankenship unveiled a series of ambitious projects during the State of the City address on July 9, 2025. Among the most significant initiatives discussed were the cleanup of old gas station sites and the development of new commercial and residential spaces, which are set to transform the local economy.

The mayor highlighted ongoing assessments of two former gas station properties, funded by Brownsville money, aimed at determining the cleanup costs. "Once we clean those up, we can work with the property owner to market them," Blankenship stated, emphasizing the potential for economic growth.

In a notable success story, the mayor recounted the collaboration that led to the establishment of a Taco Bell in the area. By negotiating a deal that involved multiple stakeholders, including the utility board and the developer, the city was able to facilitate the installation of a sewer line crucial for the project. "This has really paid off," Blankenship noted, as the site is now attracting attention from potential buyers.

The mayor also celebrated the opening of Dunham Sports, which received a $700,000 incentive from the city. The store has exceeded sales projections, filling a gap in the local market. Additionally, Andrews Place Apartments, featuring 28 upscale units, has quickly become fully occupied, marking a significant milestone in Ozark's housing development.

Blankenship praised the city's EMS service, which operates five ambulances and has recently expanded its facilities. He introduced a new retirement benefit for EMS workers, which has been adopted statewide, enhancing the city's competitive edge in attracting and retaining emergency service personnel.

The mayor also announced the introduction of an entertainment district, allowing for the sale of alcohol in designated areas, and highlighted the successful sale of 796 flags as part of a community initiative.

In a bold move to enhance the local airport's appeal, a new corporate hangar has been constructed, attracting private jets and boosting local business. "Our parking lot was full for several days," Blankenship remarked, showcasing the hangar's success in drawing visitors.

Looking ahead, the city is exploring additional funding opportunities through state grants to prepare properties for future development. Blankenship expressed optimism about ongoing negotiations for the old Bell helicopter property, which is poised to attract aviation-related businesses.
