Youngstown Public Library director discusses summer programs and budget advocacy in Austintown

Austintown Township is set to enhance its community engagement through a series of exciting programs at the local library, as highlighted during the recent trustee meeting on July 7, 2025. Amy Heiferic, the director and CEO of the Youngstown Public Library of Mahoning County, presented a range of initiatives aimed at combating summer learning loss and fostering family involvement.

The Austintown Library has already exceeded its summer discovery program goal, with 657 participants registered—a 17% increase from the previous year. This program is designed for all ages, with a notable rise in participation among adults, showcasing the library's appeal to the entire community. Heiferic emphasized that the summer discovery initiative is not solely focused on reading but includes various engaging activities, such as the upcoming Tiny Art Show and the Little Sprouts and Garden Club, which teaches children about gardening and the origins of food.

In addition to these programs, Heiferic addressed the recent budget challenges faced by libraries statewide. Thanks to community advocacy, the library system has mitigated a potential loss of $1.3 million in funding, reducing it to a $550,000 decrease. This outcome reflects the importance of local support in maintaining library services.

Looking ahead, Heiferic urged continued collaboration to navigate future budgetary challenges, particularly concerning proposed legislation that could impact local funding. She expressed optimism about working together to ensure that library services remain robust and responsive to community needs.
