Historic Madison Street home receives grant approval for $19,500 paint restoration

The Landmarks Commission of Waukesha convened on July 9, 2025, to discuss significant preservation efforts within the city, particularly focusing on the restoration of historic properties. A key highlight of the meeting was the approval of a paint repair grant for the Captain Elihu Enos house located at 517 Madison Street, a notable structure built in 1885 that showcases Queen Anne style architecture.

The house, which is situated in the Madison Street Historic District, is recognized for its historical significance, having been owned by Captain Enos, a Civil War veteran and the first county superintendent of schools. The homeowners, Anne Doleski and Richard Riojas, presented their plans for a comprehensive repainting of the house, which features five distinct colors. They submitted an estimate of $19,500 for the labor and materials required for the project, which was approved by the commission last month.

During the meeting, the homeowners expressed their commitment to maintaining the house's historical integrity while addressing the peeling paint issue. The commission members praised the couple for their dedication to preserving the property, noting the intricate details involved in the painting process. The homeowners indicated that the painting work had already commenced and was expected to take approximately six weeks to complete.

In addition to the painting grant, the commission also reviewed a request for a grant related to roof repair work at another historic property located at 305 McCall Street. This request had been previously approved but required further discussion due to the absence of the property owner at the last meeting.

The discussions underscored the commission's ongoing efforts to support the preservation of Waukesha's historic homes, reflecting a broader commitment to maintaining the city's cultural heritage.
