El Paso County discusses new water and sewer rate adjustments for East Montana Water System

In a recent special session of the El Paso County Commissioners Court, officials discussed critical updates regarding water and sewer rates for the East Montana Water System, as well as plans for the Veterans Park project. The meeting, held on July 10, 2025, highlighted the need for adjustments in utility rates to ensure the sustainability of the county's water services.

The Public Works Department presented a detailed analysis of the current water and sewer rate structure, which has remained unchanged for several years. With approximately 300 customers relying on these services, the county is facing increased operational costs and the necessity for capital improvements. The proposed adjustments include a 9% increase in water rates and a 12% increase in sewer rates, set to take effect on October 1, 2025. For an average residential customer using 8,000 gallons of water monthly, this translates to an increase of about $6 per month for water and $7 for sewer services, raising the combined bill to approximately $134.

Officials emphasized that these rate increases are essential to cover rising costs associated with water procurement and infrastructure maintenance. The county is also working on a multi-year evaluation of its water and sewer systems to project future needs and costs. The discussion underscored the importance of maintaining a sustainable water system, especially as the county expands its customer base.

In addition to utility rates, the court reviewed plans for the Veterans Park project, which aims to enhance recreational facilities in the Fabens community. The project, funded through a combination of county bonds and federal grants, is set to include a military-themed playground, a spray park, and multipurpose courts. However, the proposed baseball field will not be constructed due to space constraints. Community feedback will be sought to finalize the park's design, ensuring it meets local needs and preferences.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to transparency and community engagement as the county moves forward with these initiatives. The court plans to hold further discussions and community meetings to gather input on the proposed projects and rate adjustments, highlighting the importance of public involvement in local governance.
