El Paso County unveils Esquate Park renovation plans and new amenities

Esquate Park is set to undergo significant upgrades aimed at enhancing the recreational experience for visitors. The El Paso County Commissioners recently discussed plans to revitalize the park, which has been a community staple since its completion in 1940. With its 48-acre lake, golf course, and various sports facilities, the park has long served as a hub for outdoor activities.

The county's master plan, adopted in 2021, reflects community input on necessary improvements. Upcoming renovations will include new picnic areas, enhanced walking paths, and the planting of additional trees—approximately 150 have already been added in the past two years. The area previously occupied by the beloved Western Playland amusement park will be transformed into a festival space, complete with underground electrical installations to support various events and programming.

In terms of lake maintenance, Commissioner David Stout announced a more efficient approach to upkeep. Instead of draining the lake for cleaning, officials are considering dredging to remove debris while preserving the existing clay liner, which remains intact.

These enhancements not only aim to improve amenities but also to celebrate the park's unique location, nestled between the Franklin and Juarez Mountains. As the park continues to evolve, it remains a vital part of the community's landscape, offering a blend of nature and recreation for all to enjoy.
