El Paso County plans 75-mile trail to promote healthy community living

El Paso County is making strides in promoting healthy living and community connectivity through the development of an extensive trail system. During the recent El Paso County Commissioners Court meeting, Commissioner David Stout highlighted the Playa Drain Trail, a picturesque 7-mile route that connects Oskarte Park to Campestrano Park. This trail is part of a larger initiative aimed at creating a 75-mile countywide trail network that will stretch from the New Mexico border to Hudspeth County.

The project, known as the Paso De Norte Veil, began construction in 2018 and is designed to encourage outdoor activities and foster community engagement. Stout emphasized the importance of these trails in enhancing public health, stating, "The more opportunities that people have, I think the healthier our community is gonna be." Local resident Leonardo echoed this sentiment, noting that the trails not only connect neighborhoods but also strengthen family bonds.

In addition to the trail developments, the meeting addressed the maintenance of local golf courses and sports facilities. Tim Fulton, the director of Parks and Recreation, discussed the recent hiring of a new golf course superintendent, Brad Weiss, who is focused on improving the condition of the greens and fairways while managing water usage effectively. Fulton also reported a significant increase in participation in youth sports leagues, with expectations to accommodate 250 teams this summer, up from 150 last year.

As the county continues to enhance its recreational offerings, the community can look forward to improved access to outdoor activities and facilities that promote a healthier lifestyle.
