El Paso County unveils major upgrades to Escoctate Park amenities

During a recent El Paso County Commissioners Court meeting, officials discussed the ongoing improvements at Eskerdito Park, which has been a cherished destination since its establishment in 1940. The park features a picturesque 48-acre lake, picnic areas, and a golf course, all of which are receiving attention to ensure they meet the needs of the community. Plans include the addition of new picnic areas, walking paths, and the planting of more trees, with over 150 already added in the past two years.

Commissioner David Stout highlighted the importance of maintaining the park's lake, noting that recent analyses showed the clay liner at the bottom is in good condition. Instead of draining the lake for cleaning, officials are considering dredging to remove sediment, a more efficient approach that will keep the lake accessible for boating and fishing.

The park's history is rich, with its original design intended for multiple uses, from leisurely walks to sports activities. As part of a broader initiative, the county is also developing a 75-mile trail system that will connect neighborhoods and promote healthy living. This project, known as the Paso De Norte Trail, aims to create a linear park that stretches from the New Mexico border to Hudspeth County, enhancing outdoor opportunities for residents.

Tim Fulton, the director of parks and recreation, emphasized the importance of maintaining the park's facilities, particularly the golf course, which requires significant water management. With a new superintendent on board, efforts are underway to improve the greens and fairways while reducing water usage.
