Golf course improves water management while youth leagues thrive at Scott At The Park

El Paso County officials are tackling the challenges of maintaining sports facilities and golf courses amid rising participation and environmental concerns. During the recent Commissioners Court meeting, discussions highlighted the need for improved maintenance strategies at local parks, particularly in response to the growing number of youth sports teams.

The county is implementing new water management techniques to enhance the sustainability of its golf courses. Officials noted that the fairways have been plagued with weeds, prompting a focus on soil health. By applying specific products to the fairways and greens, the county aims to improve water absorption and retention, ultimately reducing water usage and maintenance costs.

In addition to golf course improvements, the county is experiencing a surge in youth sports participation at Scott At The Park. Last year, the summer league saw 150 teams, and this year, that number is expected to rise to 250. This growth presents challenges in maintaining the fields, which are seeing increased wear and tear. Maintenance manager Ben Vias and his team are dedicated to enhancing the quality of the diamond fields and flat fields used for soccer and football.

The county's commitment to improving sports facilities reflects a broader goal of encouraging outdoor activity among youth, countering the trend of increased screen time.
