El Paso County recognizes boxing champion Moises G Rodriguez for achievements

The El Paso County Commissioners Court convened on May 19, 2025, to address several key issues, including a successful gun buyback event and the recognition of a local boxing champion. The meeting, held in the Alicia Chacon Commissioner's Courtroom, began with a warm welcome to a third-grade class from Capistrano Elementary School, who led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Commissioner Butler highlighted the success of the third annual gun buyback event, which took place over the weekend at the Socorro Activities Complex. The initiative aimed to reduce gun violence in the community by allowing residents to voluntarily surrender unwanted firearms in exchange for gift cards. This year, the event collected 276 guns, including handguns, rifles, and assault rifles, with over $34,000 in gift cards distributed. Butler expressed gratitude to various departments and volunteers who contributed to the event's success, emphasizing the importance of community safety.

The court also recognized Moises G. Rodriguez, a rising star in amateur boxing from El Paso. Rodriguez, who recently won the 2025 Golden Gloves National Championship, was commended for his achievements and dedication to the sport. He aspires to compete in the 2028 Olympics and is currently ranked number one in the nation in his weight class. The resolution honoring Rodriguez highlighted his role as a positive influence for youth in the community.

In addition to these discussions, the court addressed various administrative matters, including a grant application for the public defender's office and the recognition of El Paso County's receipt of a prestigious financial award. The meeting underscored the county's commitment to community safety and the celebration of local achievements, reinforcing the spirit of unity and support within El Paso.
