El Paso County proclaims May as Historic Preservation Month in community celebration

In a vibrant gathering at the El Paso County Commissioners Court, officials and community partners came together to celebrate the rich history and cultural heritage of the region. The meeting, held on July 10, 2025, marked the proclamation of May as Historic Preservation Month, a time dedicated to honoring the efforts of those who work tirelessly to preserve the stories and sites that define El Paso County.

El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego opened the session with heartfelt gratitude for the county staff and community partners, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the area’s historical legacy. "Our history is not just a collection of dates and events; it is the very fabric of our community," he stated, before reading a resolution that recognized the contributions of various organizations, including the San Ysidro Genealogy and Historical Society and Preservation Texas.

The resolution highlighted the significance of National Preservation Month, which began in 1973, and the collaborative efforts of local groups to celebrate and maintain historic sites. This year, the county proudly welcomed the Smithsonian Institution's Museum on Main Street exhibit, currently on display at Las Portales Museum, further enriching the community's connection to its past.

Dr. Renteria, a key figure in the county's heritage tourism division, expressed appreciation for the partnerships that support historic preservation initiatives. "We could not do this work without our partners," he noted, acknowledging the vital role they play in restoring and maintaining historic sites.

Community representatives, including Lilian Trujillo from the San Ysidro Genealogy and Historical Society, shared their excitement about the ongoing preservation efforts and upcoming events, such as a historical reenactment scheduled for later in the month. Trujillo emphasized the importance of preserving local history, recounting tales of significant sites like the old county jail, famously linked to Billy the Kid.

Victor Hurtado from Preservation Texas also addressed the court, announcing an upcoming ribbon-cutting event for properties along the Mission Trail, which will further highlight the region's historical significance. Olga Zamorano, the new president of the Concordia Heritage Association, spoke passionately about the historic Concordia Cemetery, underscoring its importance as a site of memory and heritage.

The meeting also featured discussions on supporting women veterans through the El Paso VA's Women Veterans Program Boutique Initiative, which aims to provide essential clothing and resources for transitioning veterans. Amina Riquas from the VA highlighted the growing population of women veterans and the unique challenges they face, urging community members to contribute to the initiative.

As the meeting concluded, the commissioners expressed their commitment to preserving El Paso's rich history and supporting initiatives that foster community engagement and cultural awareness. The celebration of Historic Preservation Month serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to honor and protect the stories that shape the identity of El Paso County.
