Mount Vernon celebrates fireworks ban success and upcoming family events

Mount Vernon is buzzing with excitement this July, as the city gears up for a series of family-friendly events in its downtown parks. Following a successful Fourth of July celebration, where the new fireworks ban was largely respected, the community can take pride in the fact that the fire department responded to only two firework-related calls, with no residential fires or major injuries reported.

In a show of community spirit, the Mount Vernon Police Department (MVPD) participated in the law enforcement torch run for the Special Olympics last month, joining nearly 2,000 officials statewide. MVPD raised the most funds among municipal departments in Washington, supporting the cause of acceptance and inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Families are encouraged to mark their calendars for the 39th Annual Youth Arts Festival on Saturday, July 26, at Hillcrest Park. This free event promises a day filled with local children's entertainment and hands-on arts and crafts booths, making it a perfect outing for families.

Additionally, National Night Out will take place on Tuesday, August 5, at Edgewater Park. This event aims to foster community relationships, featuring booths, demonstrations, and activities for all ages, allowing residents to connect with local police officers.

Music lovers can enjoy the Riverwalk Summer Concert Series, which runs every Thursday evening until August. These two-hour concerts, starting at 6 PM, will showcase a variety of local and regional artists, providing a great opportunity for families to unwind and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.

Lastly, registration is now open for the second annual Valley Fest 3-on-3 basketball tournament, set for August at the Skagit Riverwalk. With 16 courts and over 150 teams competing across various age brackets, participants will have the chance to vie for the title of ValleyFest champion.
