Del Rio establishes veteran support programs with medical equipment and transportation initiatives

Val Verde County officials reported significant strides in veteran support during the April 9, 2025, Commissioners Court meeting. Over the past three months, the county has facilitated 130 transportation trips for veterans, connecting them to essential services and medical equipment. This includes 50 trips to the Audie Murphy Veterans Hospital and 47 to Kerrville, showcasing a commitment to improving access to healthcare for local veterans.

A notable partnership has been established with Project Landon in San Antonio, which will now provide free medical equipment to veterans in Del Rio. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of life for veterans in need, with a dedicated 16,000 square foot warehouse ready to supply necessary items.

The county has also initiated training sessions at Laughlin Air Force Base to assist transitioning veterans with their disability claims, ensuring they receive the benefits they deserve. Additionally, the establishment of a local transportation program has proven beneficial for retired members with disabilities, allowing them to attend medical appointments more easily.

In response to urgent needs, the county provided 11 space heaters to veterans living in unheated homes during a recent cold spell, a move that was credited with potentially saving lives. Plans for upcoming Memorial Day and Veterans Day events were also discussed, aiming to honor veterans with special celebrations and a parade that will involve participation from surrounding communities.

Furthermore, the county has joined the Behavioral Threat Assessment Management Response Team (BTAB), focusing on crisis intervention for veterans dealing with PTSD and other mental health challenges. This initiative underscores the county's proactive approach to addressing the complex needs of its veteran population.
