Verde Valley Fire District reports on swift response to Haskell Springs fire

A recent fire sparked by a lightning strike near Haskell Springs was swiftly contained thanks to the coordinated efforts of local emergency services. During the July 10 Clarkdale Council meeting, Battalion Chief Cody Harkey from the Verde Valley Fire District provided a detailed update on the incident, which occurred on July 3.

Harkey praised the rapid response from the Clarkdale Police Department, Verde Valley Fire Department, and the National Forest Service, highlighting their teamwork in tackling the blaze. The fire, which ignited around 11:30 AM, quickly grew to approximately 51.5 acres but was effectively managed due to the strategic deployment of resources.

Initial responders included multiple fire engines and a water tender, with aerial support arriving shortly after. Two helicopters dropped over 13,000 gallons of water on the fire, significantly aiding in its containment. By the evening of July 2, 56 personnel were actively engaged in firefighting efforts, and the situation improved as winds died down, reducing the fire's intensity.

The following day, rain helped extinguish remaining hotspots, allowing crews to safely monitor the area. Harkey concluded by expressing gratitude for the community's support and the efficient response that prevented further damage. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and collaboration in emergency situations.
