Del Rio County discusses sidewalk safety project and fiscal report with community input

The Val Verde County Commissioners Court held a regular meeting on July 11, 2025, where several key topics were discussed, including community safety initiatives and the county's financial health.

One of the primary discussions centered around a proposed sidewalk project along Senegas Road. Commissioner Flores highlighted the need for improved pedestrian safety, noting the increasing number of families walking along the road to access local stores and soccer fields. The project aims to construct sidewalks on both sides of Senegas Road, facilitating safer travel for pedestrians and cyclists. The county is seeking a grant of approximately $980,000 to fund this initiative. During the public hearing, community members expressed their support, emphasizing the importance of safety for pedestrians and the potential benefits for local residents.

In addition to the sidewalk project, the court reviewed the Fiscal Year 2024 Annual Comprehensive Financial Report presented by independent auditors from Koskos and Associates. The report revealed that the county received an unmodified opinion, indicating a clean audit, which reflects positively on the county's financial management. The report detailed the county's total assets, liabilities, and fund balances, highlighting a net increase in the fund balance of $1,127,000 for the year. This increase suggests a solid financial position, allowing the county to operate for 113 days without additional revenue, which is above the recommended range of 60 to 90 days.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to further engage the community regarding the sidewalk project and to continue maintaining the county's financial health. The court plans to keep the public informed and involved as these initiatives progress.
