Suffolk School Board approves property purchase and several policy amendments

The Suffolk City School Board made significant strides during its July 10, 2025 meeting, approving multiple ordinances aimed at enhancing student safety and educational policies.

The board unanimously approved a resolution to purchase a 4.84-acre property adjacent to John F. Kennedy Middle School for $19,900. This acquisition is expected to support future educational initiatives and expansion plans.

In addition, the board passed several key ordinances. One notable ordinance amends student conduct policies on school buses, allowing for the suspension of riding privileges to maintain order. This change is designed to ensure a safer environment for all students as they travel to and from school.

Another ordinance focuses on food sanitation, updating the existing policies to enhance health standards within school cafeterias. This move reflects the board's commitment to providing safe and nutritious meals for students.

The board also introduced a new ordinance regarding advanced mathematics programs for students in grades 5 through 8. This ordinance establishes automatic enrollment with an opt-out option for parents, aiming to increase participation in advanced courses.

Lastly, an ordinance was passed to align the school’s cell phone policy with recent legal changes, ensuring that students with specific learning plans or health concerns can use smart devices, including earbuds, as needed.
