Albany School District offers summer meals and prepares for fall sports registration

Under the warm glow of the Albany City School District's meeting room, officials gathered to discuss vital programs aimed at supporting students during the summer months. A key highlight was the district's commitment to providing meals for students outside the academic year. With breakfast and lunch available at 11 school locations, the initiative is designed to ensure that city residents aged 18 and under have access to nutritious food every weekday.

The district is not alone in this effort; they are partnering with the Albany Fund for Education and the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, among others, to fill gaps in meal availability for families. This collaborative program aims to supplement meals throughout the week, showcasing a strong community spirit. Officials expressed gratitude for the numerous volunteers who have stepped up to support this initiative, particularly acknowledging the hard work of community engagement coordinator Kathy Edmondson, who has been instrumental in ensuring that no student goes hungry this summer.

As the meeting progressed, the conversation shifted towards preparations for the upcoming school year. With just seven weeks until school doors reopen, officials reminded attendees that high school athletes will begin practicing in about five weeks. Open gym sessions for various sports will be available, and registration for fall sports is set to start on July 18, with practices commencing on August 18 for high school athletes and August 28 for modified sports.

This proactive approach not only addresses immediate needs but also sets the stage for a smooth transition back to school, ensuring that students are well-prepared both physically and nutritionally as they return to their academic routines.
