Foster Town Council approves roof repairs for historic Slott Meadow Covered Bridge

Foster's historic Slott Meadow Covered Bridge is set to undergo essential roof repairs starting next week, a move that has garnered community support and sparked discussions about the bridge's financial management. The repairs, which will also include the removal of hazardous trees, are funded through a dedicated account managed by the nonprofit Borders Farm Preservation.

During the Foster Town Council meeting on July 10, 2025, Linda Lewis Tibbets, president of Borders Farm Preservation, presented a letter detailing the bridge's significance and the need for the town to waive the permitting fee for the repairs. The bridge, a community project initiated in 1986, has a rich history, including a tragic arson incident shortly after its dedication in 1993. The community rallied to rebuild it, and it has since become a cherished landmark.

Council members expressed their support for the repairs, with a motion to waive the permitting fee quickly seconded. However, concerns were raised regarding the financial management of funds associated with the bridge. Gordon Rogers, a citizen and former highway director, highlighted past issues with funds being commingled, which could jeopardize future maintenance responsibilities.

Susan Joyce, treasurer for Borders Farm, addressed these concerns, clarifying that no funds have been mixed and that a separate account has been maintained for the bridge since its reconstruction. She assured the council that sufficient funds exist for the current repairs, estimated to cost around $30,000.

The council's decision to waive the fee is expected to facilitate the timely repairs, ensuring that the Slott Meadow Covered Bridge remains a vital part of Foster's heritage and community spirit. As the project moves forward, the town looks to preserve this landmark for future generations while addressing financial transparency and accountability.
