Town Council revises firefighter work schedules and paid time off policies

During the recent meeting of the Hebron Board of Selectmen on July 10, 2025, significant changes to the work schedules and compensation policies for firefighters were discussed and approved. This meeting, attended by various board members and town officials, focused on amendments to an addendum established the previous year, which aimed to adapt to evolving work demands within the fire department.

One of the primary changes involves the implementation of a 48-hour work week for full-time firefighters. This adjustment is made possible by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) exemption, which allows firefighters to work beyond the standard 40 hours without incurring overtime pay. The addition of this exemption was recommended by the town's labor attorneys, ensuring that the new schedule aligns with federal regulations.

In conjunction with the extended work hours, the board also approved an increase in paid time off (PTO) for firefighters. The new policy will grant an additional 20 hours of PTO annually, reflecting the increased workload. This decision underscores the board's commitment to supporting the well-being of its firefighters, who are now expected to work more hours each week.

Furthermore, changes were made to the holiday pay structure. Previously, firefighters were entitled to holiday pay for only four designated holidays. The revised policy now includes provisions for per diem staff who work on these holidays, ensuring they receive compensation at time and a half for their service on New Year's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

The board members expressed their understanding of the necessity for these changes, acknowledging that such scheduling practices are common in fire departments. The new policies are expected to take effect shortly, with an aim for implementation by August 1, 2025, following the board's unanimous approval.
