City Council approves decorative lighting plan from Sixth to Tenth Street

Wausau's Infrastructure & Facilities Committee made significant strides in enhancing the city's street lighting during their recent meeting on July 10, 2025. This decision comes after discussions about the potential for decorative lighting, which could have doubled the cost to approximately $700,000.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) has agreed to a cost-sharing arrangement for the standard lighting, but the municipal agreement will need to be amended to include this provision. Committee members expressed concerns about the financial implications for taxpayers, with some advocating for the more economical standard lighting option. Alder Calder Larson emphasized the importance of keeping costs manageable, stating, "If it works, why add extra cost to the city's taxpayers?"

However, a compromise was proposed by Alder Neal, suggesting decorative lighting for the initial blocks from Sixth to Tenth Street, transitioning to standard lighting thereafter. This amendment was ultimately approved by a vote of 3 to 1, reflecting a desire to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the city center while still being mindful of budget constraints.

In addition to the lighting discussions, the committee decided to table a conversation regarding sidewalk improvements until their next meeting in August. This decision allows for further consideration of the sidewalk project without delaying the lighting initiative.

The committee's actions signal a commitment to improving Wausau's infrastructure while balancing fiscal responsibility.
