Community advocates urge preservation of historic Alysona Cemetery in Williamson County

Concerns over the preservation of a historic cemetery took center stage at the Williamson County Planning Commission meeting on July 10, 2025. Local resident Kathy Marlin passionately advocated for the protection of the Alysona Cemetery, located on property slated for development on Owen Hill Road. Marlin emphasized the importance of honoring the site, particularly given its historical significance and the need to safeguard the resting places of those buried there, many of whom are part of the African American community.

Graham Perry, a historic cemetery preservation specialist from the Tennessee Historical Commission, echoed Marlin's concerns. He highlighted the potential risks posed by nearby construction, specifically regarding erosion that could threaten the integrity of graves. Perry noted that while the developer has shown a willingness to engage in preservation efforts, strict adherence to state laws is crucial to ensure the cemetery's protection.

Perry urged the commission to consider the implications of any development near the cemetery, stressing the importance of respecting the deceased and following the Family Burial Grounds Protection Act. He acknowledged the developer's cooperation but warned that any discovery of graves or related artifacts during construction must be reported to local authorities and archaeologists before proceeding.
