Instructor Jerry launches Latin ensemble and conducts praise band performances

With a passion for voice, songwriting, and piano, Jerry has recently launched a Latin ensemble that explores the rich musical traditions of Mexico and South America. From Norteno to cumbia, the ensemble's repertoire reflects a diverse cultural tapestry, culminating in their first concert, a significant milestone for both Jerry and his students.

Jerry's commitment to real-world experience is evident as he takes his praise band beyond the classroom, performing at local churches and community venues like coffee shops and tattoo parlors. This hands-on approach not only enriches the students' learning but also prepares them for future careers in music ministry, with one student already on the path to a full-time worship position. "It's incredible to see their dreams come true," Jerry reflects, emphasizing the importance of loving what you do in the music industry.

Originally from Plainview, Jerry's journey to South Plains College began with a fascination for the college's music program, sparked by a high school visit from a faculty big band. After years of performing and teaching, he found his way back to the college as an instructor in the fall of 2022. Now, he balances multiple voice and piano classes throughout the week, shaping the musical talents of his students while fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment.
