Chandler Unified School District updates mandatory reporting policies for abuse allegations

The Chandler Unified School District (CUSD) Governing Board held a regular business meeting on July 9, 2025, to discuss several key updates and initiatives affecting the district. The meeting began with Assistant Superintendent Mike Delatore providing an update on recent policy changes regarding mandatory reporting. He emphasized that, due to new legislative changes, not only school employees but also board members and substitutes are now considered mandatory reporters. This means they are required to report any reasonable suspicions of abuse or neglect directly to the appropriate agencies, such as the Department of Child Safety or local police.

Delatore also highlighted the importance of the district's anonymous tip line, which has been rebranded from Lightspeed Alert to Stop It. He encouraged parents to verify their contact information through the Infinite Campus portal and reminded them that transportation registration is ongoing. Additionally, he announced the upcoming Operation Backpack to School event, scheduled for July 15 at Compass Christian Church, where students will receive backpacks filled with school supplies and other essentials.

In a somber moment, Delatore acknowledged the passing of former communications director Terry Law, expressing condolences to his family and recognizing Law's significant contributions to the community.

The meeting continued with the introduction of Trina DeCaro as the new principal of Willis Junior High School. With 24 years of experience in education, DeCaro expressed her excitement about leading the school and her commitment to student success. She was welcomed warmly by the board and community members present.

The board also recognized the presence of students in the audience, thanking them for their participation. Following this, the meeting transitioned into the public comment section, where registered speakers were allotted two minutes each to address the board.
