Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) has successfully proposed a balanced budget for the fiscal year 2026, totaling $634.7 million, marking a significant milestone in the district's financial planning. During the CPS Board Business Meeting on July 9, 2025, the administration outlined a comprehensive strategy that includes a master list of reductions amounting to nearly $29 million, which encompasses cuts to vendor contracts, central office positions, and operational expenses.
The budget plan is divided into three key milestones: the initial master list of reductions, additional approved cuts, and final budget refinements. Notably, the board has previously approved reductions such as the reallocation of Title funds and a partial deferment of ITM device lease payments, contributing an additional $21.1 million in savings. The final refinements aim to adjust indirect costs and previous year encumbrances, ensuring a zero gap in the budget.
Board members expressed gratitude for the hard work that led to this achievement, acknowledging the ongoing challenges in managing school finances. Board member Lindley emphasized the importance of supporting educators and highlighted the introduction of a new financial reserve policy as a step in the right direction. Meanwhile, Board member Craig pointed out the necessity of making tough decisions in the face of ongoing budget constraints, urging the community to continue advocating for educational funding.
Vice President Bohm commended the administration for their efforts, noting that this budget represents a historic moment for CPS, especially as it is Superintendent Murphy's first real budget and Treasurer Wagner's last. However, he cautioned that the district is not out of the woods yet, as future federal decisions could impact funding.
As CPS moves forward, the board remains committed to ensuring that students receive a quality education despite the financial hurdles ahead. The approval of this balanced budget is a crucial step in navigating the complexities of school funding and maintaining educational standards in the community.
