Will County Sheriff's Department proposes hiring new deputy for school resource officer role

Will County is set to bolster its law enforcement presence in schools following a recent decision by the Executive Committee to approve the hiring of an additional deputy for the Sheriff's Department. This move comes in response to a pressing need for more enforcement personnel, as the department currently faces a shortage of deputies due to retirements and medical leave.

During the meeting on July 10, 2025, Dan Jungles from the Sheriff's Office outlined the necessity for this new position, highlighting that the department is down nine deputies and has six in training at the police academy. The additional deputy will specifically serve as a School Resource Officer (SRO) at a local school, a role that has gained increased importance in light of recent national events concerning school safety.

The school district will fund the position at a rate of $193,478.40 per year, which covers the deputy's salary and associated costs. This funding arrangement not only addresses the immediate staffing needs but also allows the Sheriff's Department to enhance its service offerings to the community. The hiring process is expected to cost approximately $72,000 plus benefits, which will be offset by the school district's contribution.
