Julie Scott presents alarming health statistics to Coffee ISD School Health Advisory Council

The Canutillo Independent School District (CISD) Regular Board Meeting on April 22, 2025, highlighted significant health concerns among students, as presented by Julie Scott, co-chair of the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC).

Scott reported that the district currently has 521 students diagnosed with asthma, 379 with allergies that could lead to anaphylaxis, and 26 students living with diabetes. Additionally, there are 72 students documented with epilepsy or seizure disorders. The health data revealed a staggering 13,685 illness-related visits to school clinics this year, with 14,711 of those visits involving medication.

Scott expressed concern about the unpredictability of health-related issues as students transition from elementary to secondary education. She noted that the health landscape can shift dramatically from year to year, making it challenging to anticipate future needs.

The presentation underscored the importance of ongoing health monitoring and support within the district. Scott offered detailed handouts for board members, emphasizing the need for awareness and proactive measures to address these health challenges.
