Guahan honors Breaking Wave Theater for impactful climate-themed performances

The Guam Legislature convened on July 14, 2025, at 4:30 PM for a special certificate presentation honoring Breaking Wave Theater, a collaborative group of artists recognized for their impactful production, "We Will Not Go Silent." Senator Shelly V. Calvo led the ceremony, emphasizing the significance of the theater's work in addressing pressing issues such as the climate crisis, colonization, and militarization.

Senator Calvo commended the nine artists involved in the production for their ability to engage the community through various forms of creative expression, including movement, music, and poetry. She highlighted how their work serves as a call to reflection and action, reminding the audience of their responsibilities as stewards of Guam, or Guahan. The senator noted that the production has not only resonated locally but has also gained national recognition, supported by a $120,000 grant from the New England Foundation for the Arts, with additional funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Doris Duke Foundation.

In her remarks, Senator Calvo expressed deep gratitude for the collaborative spirit that defined the production, stating that it was a collective effort involving artists, educators, youth, elders, and allies. She presented the certificate not only as a recognition of their artistry but also as a promise to continue uplifting and investing in the arts within the community.

Following the presentation, the senator invited Breaking Wave Theater to perform "Fauuna's Final Words," showcasing their talent and contributions to the community. The event underscored the importance of art in civic engagement and the role of community-led narratives in shaping policy and perspectives. The meeting concluded with a commitment to ongoing dialogue and support for the arts in Guam.
