Alabama Board approves updated school leadership standards and recognizes Doctor Dana Virgil

The Alabama Board of Education made significant strides in enhancing school leadership standards during its recent meeting on July 14, 2025. The board unanimously voted to adopt a new administrative code rule aimed at updating the Alabama standards for school leadership, marking the first major revision in over a decade.

Dr. Eric Mackey, the State Superintendent, explained that the updates were necessary due to recent legislative changes that introduced new principal pathways and stipends. These changes require a revamped professional learning plan for principals, ensuring that the training aligns with current educational standards rather than outdated ones. "The professional learning standards for school leadership have not been updated in a decade," Dr. Mackey stated, emphasizing the importance of modernizing the framework to better support school leaders.

In addition to the main agenda item, the board took a moment to recognize Dr. Dana Virgil, the National School Counselor of the Year from Daleville High School. Dr. Virgil expressed her gratitude for the support she has received since moving to Alabama, highlighting the positive impact of the state's education department on her transition. "I am so blessed to be able to represent not only Daleville City Schools but the great state of Alabama," she said.

The meeting also celebrated Arts Education Month, with board members participating in events recognizing student achievements in visual arts. Dr. Mackey noted the ongoing festivities, including musical performances scheduled throughout the month, reinforcing the board's commitment to promoting arts education.
