Groff Charity Classic kicks off at Country Club of York featuring 12 competitive teams

The Groff Charity Classic kicked off its eleventh annual tournament at the Country Club of York on July 12, 2025, featuring 12 teams competing for the title of 2025 champions. This year’s event marks a transition as Mike Croft, who led the tournament for a decade, has passed the reins to Kevin May and his new committee, promising an exciting lineup of matches and special guests.

The tournament aims to raise funds for the York Opioid Collaborative, addressing the ongoing opioid crisis that has impacted the local community. The collaborative's involvement highlights the event's commitment to social responsibility, with proceeds directed towards combating the epidemic.

The first match featured Carl Hoekstedt and Sophie Popescue against Ilya Shatasvili and Fernie Angelis. Hoekstedt, a recent graduate and director at the Raw Tennis Academy, partnered with rising star Popescue, while Shatasvili, a seasoned player with a strong background, teamed up with newcomer Angelis, who has represented Peru in international competitions.
